This morning i read a page-long newspaper article about poverty nowadays, which overtime had turned from a mere product of laziness into a product of government's ignorance into a product for display. Apparently, now in Jakarta, foreign tourists can find a particular tour service which offers them the remarkable, haunting visits to countless exhibitions of poverty all around the city. And by exhibitions i don't mean anything regarding museums or artwork. It's a real live exhibition, which means the tour guide will take them from one site where poverty exists to another. For example: the cramped cardboard-houses slums surrounding abandoned railroad tracks, the piles of city garbage where scavengers hunt for their survival, or the stinking area along the Ciliwung river on which immigrants make their below-the-poverty-line living.
This is like, sprinkling salt onto an open wound. The tourists get their chance of a second's pity, the tour guide gets his money, and the poor people on the showroom get their moment of degradation. I read that the tour's mission is to connect people from different backrounds together, but what is there to connect if the only thing the tourists do is watch and then maybe have a discussion with their fellows back home regarding how poor Indonesia is? It would be a different story if they decided to do something about the poverty they had just recently observed, but it's no guarentee that they're going to build some sort of foundation to diminish famine or such, rather than just paying cash to the immoral guide and then leave it at that. Obviously they do not need guide to watch poverty, since it's practically everywhere here.
I sincerely think that whoever created the tour service is depraved. What kind of creature would feed his stomach full by showing off other people's calamity? To be fair, i also read that almost half of the tour service's income is dedicated for the poor, so it's a give-back kind of thing. But still, it's not much - considering that the poors are being used up for some kind of advertisement - and also the tour service is profit-oriented isn't it? That's what I would call sucking up fortune out of the ill-fated, in other word, a parasite.
YES, it is true that Indonesia has a vast population of people living under the poverty line and NO, I am not trying to cover it up by opposing such imbecile behaviour of intentionally displaying it to the general public. My point is, if you megalomaniacs can't, in any way, offer some help to improve their condition, then why not just leave them alone? They deserve to have their own rights of not being the centerpiece of humiliation, because what happened to them is none other than just the turning of a wheel, and they're currently at the bottom. So my suggestion is, just let them be.
(The megalomaniacs i mentioned above also goes for political oportunists who, on their TV hugging-and-shaking-hands-with-victims-of-poverty campaigns, assured the protection and well-being of the poors, while looking from past experiences, there's a big chance that it's nothing but an empty promise, a feud. And also for creators of the high-rated reality shows where audiences can laugh at poor people shaking their hands off when some stranger randomly gives them money or offers to reconstruct their weathered houses)

Another day wasted.
I like it when guys like me coz they think I'm different. Like, when they (or he, whatever) sent me a text message at 4 o'clock in the morning to say "...i think you're different from most girls, in a good way". And when the next day I told him, "thanks, you made me feel special", he replied with "you are special". It felt drop-dead-satisfying. It's like winning a game you've been playing for your entire life. It's like having a glow-in-the-dark substance flowing through your veins. It's like being bold when every other thing is dull.
Unfortunately that particular guy is somewhere across the universe.
Anyway, i have a book recommendation: the Catcher in the Rye.

It's a about a boy named Holden Caulfield, and he's like, totally lost. Not lost as in stranded on some solitary island, bust lost as in not knowing what to expect from life. He just got expelled from his boarding school - in which he never felt belong anyway - and he decided to runaway home, because, well, he thought he just couldn't live there anymore.
So in search of himself, he did a concealed, internal rebellion on the world - his world, to be precise. He viewed everything like nobody had ever done before, minding the simple trivial details while exuding logical skepticism out of his every thought. He examined everything he saw, felt, heard, tasted, fantasized, with descriptions that were both obscure yet engaging, exaggerated yet inevitably true. His feeling of alienation made him hard to trust anyone. Anyone except his little sister, Phoebe, whom he thought was the only one he knew who had a clear mind amidst all the nonsense he was getting through.
And to that little Phoebe he finally spilled out his whole heart. His deepest, incomprehensible thought that made him the way he was:
"...I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of rye and all. Thousands of little kids, and nobody's around — nobody big, I mean — except me. And I'm standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff — I mean if they're running and they don't look where they're going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That's all I'd do all day. I'd just be the catcher in the rye and all. I know it's crazy, but that's the only thing I'd really like to be. I know it's crazy."
And instantly i fell in love with him.
P.S. This entry is titled Another Day Wasted because right now, right this moment, I'm supposed to be studying physics for the upcoming exam. All i did was flick through a couple of pages and then got tempted to write. *sigh*

Walking on a dream.
How would you define boredom?
For me, boredom represents repetition. Endless repetition that got me unaware of when it even started and when it's going to come for an end. It's an inevitable routine that takes me running through time, blindly pursuing for something unknown at the end of the tunnel while also ignoring the small shapeless details perched on the surroundings. Each passing day would continuously repeat itself: wake up in the morning, go to school, do some talks laughs gossips, come home from school, do homework, eat, sleep, and wake up the next morning again.
Ironically not many people are aware that they are undergoing that kind of boredom. For some of them it's just like, one day down, thousands more to go. But then again, if we were the ones who indefinitely are boredom-concious, what could we do about it anyway? Possibly nothing. We would still choose the safer way to survive by sticking to the routine, sucking up every passing joy and irk that the world produces. In other words, just live with it. And then someday when we - for a short while - find an excuse to break out from our routine, we would frantically enjoy it - for a short while - but then we would start missing our old life again. Excitements wouldn't be so exciting if it happens everyday, otherwise it would be just another form of repetition aka boredom. It's like like a splash of icy cold water on lazy, brooding summer days.
Right now, what I really wanna do to get out of this boredom and dive into the excitements are:
- Backpack around Africa and have a taste of the exotic heat, fragrance, people, wilderness, way of life
- Write a pulitzer-winning memoir
- Swim across the Indian ocean just to climb the Sydney Harbor Bridge while the sun sets
- Shove it up their asses
- Fly like Peter
- Turn malls into wildlife preservation rainforests
- Burn every single exam sheets to ashes and bury them 100 meters deep into the ground so we won't be having them next week
Seriously are those too much to ask for? ;)
We are always running for the thrill of it thrill of it
Always pushing up the hill searching for the thrill of it
On and on and on we are calling out and out again
Never looking down I’m just in awe of what’s in front of me

Murdered by boredom.
What kind of parents don't let their daughter to her friend's birthday party and instead forced her to tag along to their college reunion, which they perfectly knew will be full of fat bald men and sagging fat women in their fifties and talk nothing but politics and their unforgettably fulfilling college life, and if during the event she shows a tiny bit of boredom or unwillingness to mingle with the super-tedious crowd, they'll go berserk and yell at her for being sooo fucking "ungrateful"??????? geezzz gimme a break, and my own life if u don't mind!!
So yeah, today started out sweet (too sweet maybe) and then THIS happened. And FYI, I'm still at the oh-so-exciting reunion right now, right this second. I wish I could make out a false alarm that a huuuge flood is coming so we all can just scurry back to our own houses. What sucks is that I obviously can't call any of my friends to seek comfort right now since they are all at the goddamn party.
I'm sure you are all tired of hearing my ungrateful blabbers, so let's just talk about yesterday instead. You know that feeling when you ate too much sugar and you get all hyped up and such but your tongue turned numb anyway? Yeah that's the kind of state i was in when i climbed up to my bed yesterday night. All flowery and dreamy and full of upcoming hopes yet also speechless. Like, dumb-struck love-struck speechless, not believing what just happened speechless. And all that was over a guy, whom I only met for 2 whole weeks 5 months ago, who happens to be 100000000000000 miles away, and who promised that we'll meet again in 1,5 year time (that is after his graduation).
ADILLA IS A PATHETIC WEIRDO
The thing is, what are the boundaries of being pathetic and realistic anyway? I mean, I've met him in person, I've talked and laughed with him, I've touched and hugged him, I've felt his lips, I've felt his heart beat, but still the only thing that connects us right now is a piece of shit called technology, and imagine if we were living in the stone age, how would we know that we miss each other every single remaining day??
PATHETIC, ADILLA, PATHETIC!!
Oh yaaay we're going home now! FINALLY!

All play and no work makes adilla a dumb girl.
Why is it that nowadays the potentials of our brain are merely judged by our ability to excel in science, and how far do we strive to get excellent grades in maths and biology and physics and chemistry tests. For people who are as indifferent to science as I am(but achieve more in other things) that sure causes much of an inconvenience.
The majority of highschools in Indonesia have more science-study classes than social-study classes, this caused by the fact that most students would prefer getting into science classes when they turn to year 11. Although fortunately decreasing over time, there is still this image that sticks to the back of people's heads that students who manage to get accepted to science classes are "smarter" than those who get into social classes. The reason is simple: in science ur brain works harder to comprehend things with logical senses. But when you think about it, there isn't any evident that social classes students don't use their logics too. For example, when they are assigned to analyse a political problem, don't they also have to come up with good logic and reasonable judgements to solve the problem?
Another thing is that social subjects could be more necessary in lives. In social we study politics (always a big and challenging issue, and when you don't know who the secretary-general of the United Nations is, that actually means ur stupid), psychology (an essential media to understand ourselves), and geography (it's always important to learn to preserve the planet we're living on). Whereas in advanced maths we ought to study differentials and algebra and trigonometry, calculating numbers which drag on and on beyond eternity, over-working our poor brain that goes withered after a while, when obviously we don't need to use neither algebra or trigonometry to count how much money we have to pay to buy daily groceries. In biology, we have to memorize how many bones we have in our bodies and what their names are, and also the names of plants and animals in latin, in which we would already forget the next day anyway. Why the hell should I care about the names of plants and animals in latin?? I'm pretty happy with the fact that I can call those four-legged creatures as 'dogs', thank you very much.
Also, being a smartie in maths doesn't actually mean that you're clever. Just because your brain works fast in calculating zillions of numbers doesn't make you a problem solver who has an outstanding out-of-the-box view about the world and is articulate in expressing your ideas. Believe me, I know alot of people who might have the top grades in science but are actually vain inside.
Last year I was nationally granted a scholarship to be one of the 60 students to represent Indonesia for a short cultural program in Japan (I don't know about you, but that seemed like a pretty huge achievement to me). Yet, my parents weren't wholly satisfied and actually said that they wouldn't call it an achievement, since it had nothing to do with science. Oh fine mom, maybe i should win an international physics olympic first to make you proud of me?? Pffft as if that's gonna happen...
FYI, I'm in science studies myself. Although i wanted to be a psychologist, my parents strictly assured me to get into science class since it is believed that it would help finding me good university. I was actually indifferent at first regarding which class i would be accepted into, but then i obeyed them anyway. And now I'm starting to think that I made a rather bad choice :s

Sleeping Beauty in rhymes.
Today i was effortlessly *trying* to clean up my outrageously filthy bedroom when I found a stack of old papers stuck on the very back of my study desk. Flicking through the dusty, yellowing pages of what apparently was left of my English school project back in Melbourne, I found a collection of poems i wrote for an 8th grade assignment. Reminiscing the old times, I'm starting to think that they were the first literature piece I've ever written, which might also triggered my growing enthusiasm for literature.
Among the assigned poems, there was one where we were suposed to write a rhyming stanza based on a fairy tale. As cheesy and crappy as it might be, surprisingly i got the highest mark in my class :D (oh please, what can you possibly expect from a bunch of free-flowing 8th graders)
The Sleeping Beauty
One night when the silence was torn
A beautiful princess was torn
The King and Queen held a Celebration
They invited people from every nation
Out of the guests, there were three good witches
They liked to eat peaches
The first and second witches gave the princess a good spell
Suddenly, an evil witch came without ringin the bell
The King and Queen were very shocked
Because the gates were already locked
The evil witch gave the princess a curse
That at the age of 16, she will need a hearse
After she's gone, the third good witch gave the princess her pitch
Although she couldn't cancel the curse of the evil witch
She wished that the princess would be asleep for a hundred years
Instead of dying in front of her 16 years old peers
Only a true love kiss could awaken her
Given by a young handsome prince wearing a fur
A hundred and 16 years later
(And the sleeping princess hadn't grown fatter)
A kind and handsome prince came
He rode on a white horse glittering with fame
In a tower, he found the princess sleeping on her bed
Instantly he knew that she wasn't dead
His heart began to shatter
And after he kissed her, they lived happily ever after
~~~
cute, ain't it? ^_^
(And the sleeping princess hadn't grown fatter)
A kind and handsome prince came
He rode on a white horse glittering with fame
In a tower, he found the princess sleeping on her bed
Instantly he knew that she wasn't dead
His heart began to shatter
And after he kissed her, they lived happily ever after
~~~
cute, ain't it? ^_^
